Calling All Champions: Star2Star Phone System Overview

Back in early 2014, we decided to put into place a company-wide phone system as a continued part of our plan to move away from individual silos and work more as one big team. With everyone on the same system, we can all contact and collaborate with each other much more easily. In addition, we can ensure that customers who call the main lines will always reach a live voice instead of a machine, since with the new phone system, calls are routed to multiple people. Lastly, it aids everyone in their ability to get a little more work-life balance by setting up a controllable call flow.

With the phone system, Champions can separate business calls from personal calls and actually turn off their mobile phones when on vacation. Calls can potentially even be forwarded to a project or customer backup if prepared in advanced. For those of you here longer than a couple of years, you probably noticed that we changed from mobile numbers on business cards to direct numbers now. This was done to aid with the process of controlling and routing calls. You can have the system only ring your desk phone, completely bypass your desk phone and have it ring your mobile phone, or have it ring one then the other. Actually, if for some reason you want it to ring your desk phone, your mobile phone, your home phone, your secret hideout phone, and your uncle’s sister’s son’s phone all at the same time, you can do that too!

Web Portal
All configuration for your phone is done through the Star2Star web portal at https://portal.star2star.com/. Everyone with a desk phone should have a login account on the portal. Once you log into the portal, you will see lots of options. The six most important are Find Me/Follow Me, Voicemail, Speed Dials, Company-Wide Directory, the Star2Star Application Framework, and the StarDialer Application (for use with Outlook).

Phone Feature Guide
For detailed instructions on how to use the system and videos on your desk phone in particular, please view the Phone Feature Guide on SharePoint at Phone-Guide-Link. Page 14 includes links to comprehensive training videos for each different phone type. Many of the phones are VVX 400/410 or IP 450 phones. Most configuration changes in the portal will require that you Save Changes to PBX on the portal and then reboot your desk phone (either from the advanced menu or by cycling power).

Find Me/Follow Me
One of the main features which allows control of the initial call flow mentioned above is Find Me/Follow Me, and it has Immediate, Sequential, and All routing options. Find Me/Follow Me can be set up to let the caller know that it is “finding” you or to just do it in silence. To control which device handles the voicemail, there is a little bit of timing experimentation that needs to be done if using sequential calling because if the secondary number is not answered or picked up by its voicemail before the ring time set in the portal, the call will roll back to voicemail in the Star2Star system. This may be the best option, as the Star2Star voicemail can be set up to email you a WAV file that can be listened to on a smart phone or forwarded on to someone else if necessary. Detailed instructions are on page 324 of the Phone Feature Guide.

Voicemail
Your voicemail can be quickly accessed from your desk phone by dialing 1000 or hitting the built-in button for voicemail. If you are away from your desk, just call your number, and press * when voicemail answers. From the portal, you can set up whether voicemail is sent to your desk phone, to your email as a WAV file, or to both. You can also set up your voicemail PIN from the portal and things like whether or not to include Caller ID and date/time info before the message. Please make sure that you change your PIN from the default, set up your name for the directory, and update your voicemail message. Detailed instructions are on page 316 of the Phone Feature Guide. ProTip: Tired of that red light blinking on your desk phone? If so, delete all of the current messages, and use the portal to set the system up to email you WAV files and automatically delete voicemail from the desk phone.

Speed Dials
You can change the speed dial numbers on your home screen to any number inside or outside the company. From the portal, choose Speed Dial, then start filling the list. The numbers are grouped by office location in the drop-down, and at the end is the best option called Add Custom Number, which allows you to enter the display name (better than “Tom Jones Line 1”) and enter 3 digit (in-office extension), 5 digit (remote office extension), 7 digit (local call), or 10 digit (U.S. call) numbers.

Company-Wide Directory
On the home page of the company SharePoint site, there is a list called Champion Directory, which has up to date contact information for everyone in the company. If you click on the list and then go to the List tab under List Tools, there is an option to Connect to Outlook. This will add the directory as an Other Contacts list directly in your Outlook Contacts, so it will always be up to date.

Star2Star Application Framework
The Star2Star Application Framework is a desktop application best used for easily transferring calls and chatting with other users but also has a full list of all physical phones in the company with an easy search feature to find and call any extension, mobile phone or voicemail. The installation file can be retrieved from the configuration page of the portal.

StarDialer Application for Outlook
The StarDialer Application is an Asterisk add-on to the Windows Phone and modem configuration that will allow direct dialing control of your desk phone right from Outlook Contacts. It is easy to set up and works great. The application can be downloaded from the web portal, and detailed installation instructions and a quick user guide are located on SharePoint at StarDialer-Guide-Link.

As we continue to grow as a company, the need to connect and collaborate between offices and even within our individual offices only increases. The company-wide phone system enhances our ability to communicate with one another and our customers, and its features and applications can improve calling/voicemail efficiency to ensure the Champion team stays consistently connected. Access the Star2Star portal today to customize your phone and voicemail configuration and take full advantage of our outstanding phone system!

Employee Spotlights (Oct 2015)

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Be the “Go-To” guy for everything you touch or will touch.

What book did you read last or are currently reading?

A Guide to the Automation Body of Knowledge. Working toward that CAP.

Top 3 Life Highlights (or just 1 if it was really big )?

Moving in with/next to three of my close friends my first year of college. Meeting my girlfriend in speech class and then reuniting with her three years later. My last highlight has yet to happen because I’m planning on proposing to my girlfriend next month. I told her that she’s getting a surprise next month too, and she has no idea… UPDATE: I popped the question [on October 2nd,] and she said yes! )

Craziest Halloween costume or story?

My uncle and I went as Sub Zero and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat one year. Got tons of responses. We really should’ve entered the costume contest… Also, I spray painted some of my hair gray and went as House. I grabbed a cane and filled an empty prescription bottle with tic-tacs for dramatic effect. I was 18 at the time and got in the bar with no ID. I guess the bouncer didn’t watch the show…

Favorite pet?

My old roommate got a German Shepherd/great Pyrenees puppy when we lived together. I don’t really like pets, but this dog was so naturally calm and lazy that I liked him.

What is the first concert you attended?

MEGADETH when I was 16. My friends and I fought to the front but had to give it up because the crowd was way too brutal.

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Make sure you enjoy what you do. Always strive to improve.  Never stop learning.

What book did you read last or are currently reading?

Baker’s Hawk – It’s a story about a boy who rescues and injured hawk and takes it to an old man that lives in the mountains to get help saving the bird, their trials and friendship.

Top 3 Life Highlights (or just 1 if it was really big )?

When I married my wife.
When my children were born.
When my grandchildren are born.

Craziest Halloween costume or story?

When I was in high school we talked a bunch of friends into going to a cemetery around midnight. A couple of us made excuses that we couldn’t make it and instead went early to set up a little fun. Two in the group were in on it and would help get the others worked up. Dressed in black, we would duck in and out of shadows, light candles on headstones, rattle bushes, and would reach out from a hiding place to gently brush someone, anything to scare the group until they ran screaming out of the cemetery.

Favorite pet?

We had about every kind of pet from the normal cats and dogs to hedgehogs, chameleons, and snakes. The best one was a parrot that my daughter had when she was four. He went with her everywhere, riding on her shoulder. When we went shopping, he would hide in the sleeve of her jacket, occasionally poking his head out to see what was going on. At night, he would sleep on a pillow next to hers and waited to make noise until she woke up in the morning.

What is the first concert you attended?

There were quite a few back in high school. The first was probably when a bunch of friends went to Styx.

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Champion is full of people who can be invaluable references that can save you a lot of time and headache.

What book did you read last or are currently reading?

Oh, the Places You’ll Go (read to my daughter)

Top 3 Life Highlights (or just 1 if it was really big )?

Getting Married to my wonderful wife, Carrie.
The birth of my daughter, Sydney.
Living in Alaska.

Craziest Halloween costume or story?

My favorite Halloween costume was from 10 years ago. I waited till the last minute to get a costume, so hours before the Halloween party I cobbled together a pretty authentic looking Scorpion (from Mortal Kombat) costume that somehow managed to win second place in the costume contest.

Favorite pet?

Our Yorkie, Harley.

What is the first concert you attended?

Run-DMC at Grooving on the Grounds on LSU’s campus.

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Top 3 Life Highlights (or just 1 if it was really big )?

Marrying Pam.
My son Cade being born.
Having a son with Autism, he has helped me become a better person.

Craziest Halloween costume or story?

Airplane made from a large cardboard box, but I couldn’t sit down. A bunch of grapes, also hard to sit down. And a baby– let’s just say my bottle wasn’t filled with milk .

Favorite pet?

Shih Tzu, but I am enjoying not having any pets right now!

What is the first concert you attended?

Texas Can Jam. My brother took me when I was 10 years old; Foghat, Little River Band, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, America, ZZ Top.

What advice would you give to recent new hires?

I have worked for Champion since 2011 and it has been amazing to watch how this company has grown. Working for Champion will be a great experience for anyone interested in evolving their skills, working in different environments and growing right along with the company.

What book did you read last or are currently reading?

I have a very eclectic taste when it comes to books. Currently I am reading a book about serial killers and The 5 Love Languages.

Top 3 Life Highlights (or just 1 if it was really big )?

I am originally from California and moved to Texas in 2008. Moving to Houston was such a big step and changed my life in so many ways, but the best part was meeting my husband.

Craziest Halloween costume or story?

My husband Dustin and I got married on Halloween. It was so much fun! We even had a Dexter “kill room” in our dining room.

Favorite pet?

I have always favored dogs (I have 2 Chihuahuas and a pit bull), but a year and a half ago I got my first cat and she has been such a delight.

What is the first concert you attended?

My first concert was The Offspring, my all-time favorite band.

Project Execution Methodology Documents

Champion’s project execution methodology, which includes controlling, initiating, planning, executing, and closing, heavily relies on the planning stage. During this stage, the team will develop project plans, will define the total scope of a project using a Functional Requirements Specification (FRS), and write testing procedures (to name a few activities) so that the team and the customer have a roadmap of the entire project and aren’t blind sided by the unknown. In short, we develop these documents as an effort to make sure all of our projects have customer buy-in from the outset, are planned before they’re executed, and (hopefully) go off without a hitch, resulting in an amazing project execution, one aspect of our business that makes our customers repeat customers for years to come.

But have you ever found yourself trying to figure out what these documents are, what they look like, and how to write one? Don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

Did you know that you can find examples of project documents on the PM site on SharePoint? The site shows varying examples of

 Project Plans
 FRS Documents
 FAT Procedures
 SAT Procedures
 Hardware Specifications
 Kickoff Meeting Agendas
 HMI Submittals
 Project Delivery Documents
 Panel Build Handoffs
 Project Quality Plans

If you’re stuck on where to start or need some sample content, browse through some of them to get an idea of what they look like and what to include. We even have blank templates for you to use!

If you’re a pro at developing Project Plans or HMI Submittals or any other project document, we want YOUR samples. One of the tenants of the Collaborative Way is helping each other as best as possible. By submitting your documents to the Project Documents Examples portal on SharePoint, you’ll get to share your work with everyone else in the company and help them to deliver better, higher quality planning, which leads to better executed projects. It’s a win for everyone all around.

Submitting documents

It’s easy to share samples of your project documents:

1: Follow this link.

2: Click         .

3: Click Browse.

4: Find and upload your document using Windows Explorer.

5: Click OK.

6: Fill in the properties and write a description of the content. (Perhaps include a description of the content found inside the document or a description of the project itself.)

This Month in History (Oct 2015)

OCTOBER

Oct. 28, 1886: In New York Harbor, President Grover Cleveland presided over a ceremony of dedication for the Statue of Liberty.1  The statue was a gift from France and serves as a symbol of democracy and freedom.21

Oct. 23, 1915: Twenty-five thousand women marched in New York City, demanding the right to vote.1  Ratified five years later in 1920, the 19th Amendment finally granted that right to American women.

Oct. 30, 1938: Orson Welles narrated his “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, an adaptation of the novel by H.G. Wells, causing panic when listeners took as true the realistically performed news reports of a Martian invasion.1

Oct. 2, 1950: Charlie Brown and the gang made their debut when the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz first appeared in newspaper.1

Changes to Medical Insurance Deductible Limits in 2016

In the past and through the end of 2015, individuals who changed from an Individual Plan to a Family Plan found their Out-of-Pocket (OOP) limit significantly increasing so it was then possible for the medical bills of a single person on the plan to reach the family max before the plan started paying at 100%, instead of at the lower individual Out-of-Pocket maximum that was in place on the Individual Plan. Starting in 2016 as part of the Affordable Care Act, the limit for individuals within a family will be the same as for individuals not on a family plan. This means that your insurance will pay out at 100% for any medical bills directly related to any individual once that person reaches the individual OOP limit and will pay out at 100% for all family members once the sum of any family members on the plan OOP expenses hits the family OOP limit.

Birthday Holiday History and Changes

The majority of Champions probably do not know the history of the Birthday Holiday at Champion as it was probably in place since you started. Prior to 2009, this holiday did not exist. We tried to take individuals out for lunch to celebrate, but there was no consistency among offices or individuals, and unfortunately, some people were unintentionally left out. To solve this, we decided to swap lunches for the Birthday Holiday so that everyone got something special on their birthday. While the original intention was for everyone to use that holiday on or very close to their actual birthday to enjoy time with their loved ones, we understand the dynamics of work and school schedules make this difficult. For this reason, starting today, we are allowing the Birthday Holiday to be taken up to 6 months in advance or up to 6 months after your actual birthday, as well as in pieces so that it can be taken over multiple days up to 8 hours. We hope that everyone will use their birthday to do something special and hopefully spend with your loved ones. To restate, Happy Birthday from Champion!

Healthy Low-Cal Football Snack Recipe

Southwestern Layered Bean Dip

Skip the super-greasy fried food and creamy dips and go for a healthy low-cal football snack recipe instead. You’ll eat fewer calories and still have a delicious snack to enjoy throughout the game. Plenty of black beans, salsa and chopped fresh vegetables mean a healthy amount of dietary fiber in this Tex-Mex layered dip. Be sure to have lots of baked tortilla chips on hand when you serve it.

12 servings  |  Prep Time: 20 minutes  |  Total Time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 16-ounce can nonfat refried beans, preferably “spicy”
  • 1 15-ounce can black beans, rinsed
  • 4 scallions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup prepared salsa
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 cup pickled jalapeño slices, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack, or Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 1-1/2 cups chopped romaine lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1 medium avocado, chopped
  • 1/4 cup canned sliced black olives, (optional)
NUTRITION:

Per serving: 146 calories; 7g fat (3g sat, 3g mono); 12mg cholesterol; 15g carbohydrates; 7g protein; 5g fiber; 288mg sodium; 164mg potassium. Carbohydrate Servings: 1/2.

Exchanges: 1 starch, 1 very lean meat, 1 fat

PREPARATION:

  1. Combine refried beans, black beans, scallions, salsa, cumin, chili powder and jalapeños in a medium bowl. Transfer to a shallow 2-quart microwave-safe dish; sprinkle with cheese.
  2. Microwave on High until the cheese is melted and the beans are hot, 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Spread sour cream evenly over the hot bean mixture, then scatter with lettuce, tomato, avocado and olives (if using).

TIPS & NOTES:

  • Make Ahead Tip: Prepare through Step 1, cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day. To serve, continue with Steps 2 & 3.
  • Use reduced-fat sour cream along with full-fat (and full-flavored) cheese to make the dip lighter without compromising great taste.
  • Add 1 cup finely chopped cooked chicken if desired.
